Polished
This finish is shiny and smooth. Most churchyards don’t allow polished finishes because of their reflective nature. Churchyards allow headstones that are not reflective in nature so that they don’t look out of place. Polished headstones require regular maintenance and cleaning.
Part-polished
These types of headstones are honed or polished on the base and inscription area. Everywhere else is sanded, sawn, rubbed or blasted. This effect is perfect for emphasizing the images and the headstone wording.
Honed
These are smooth but unreflective finishes of headstones. This effect is achieved by removing the polish partially with dust. This finish is common with headstones that have more than three colours to give them more depth. These types of finishes are usually permitted in churchyards.
Base finishes
People can decide to finish the base differently from the headstone. The base can be polished for names, epitaph and dates to keep the tablet simple. Bevel, flush and slant makers may have the same finishes as the upright headstones.
Pitched
These types of headstone finishes are created with a hammer or bolster. They are very rustic and are normally used in older churchyards.
There are other types of finishes. You choose the type of headstone designs depending on your personal preference and the laws of the area you want to lay your dead. Finishes such as sawed, steeled and axed are less common. They can be achieved using different flaming, chisels and sandblasting techniques. A headstone dealer should offer several headstone finishes to suit different customers.
